Business Intelligence Development Studio BIDS

Today I will tell you about Business Intelligence Development Studio BIDS.

BIDS is the tool we use to develop reporting. The tool provides a sensory interface based on Microsoft’s Visual Studio product that has been used by developers for years. The SQL Server 2008 version of BIDS has nice extensions to the user interface for designing, developing and testing reports, which you will see during the tutorial.

BIDS Sql Server

BIDS is available in SQL Server. When you are running the SQL Server installer, you need to click on the Business Intelligence Development Studio check box in the Shared Features section to install BIDS. You will probably want to select all the items in the Shared Features section.

Once the installation is complete, you can start BIDS from the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 application group.

The BIDS chart for developing reports is based on the concept of projects and solutions. A project is actually a container for some kind of object such as SSRS reports, web pages, SQL Server Integration Services folders and so on. Projects can be used to set things up in a meaningful way.

For example, I can have one project for all the reports used by the Accounting Department, another project for the Human Resource Department reports, and another project for the Finance Department. .

One solution is one container for one or more projects. Think of a solution as a complete program that can consist of several different types of projects, such as a report project, a SQL Server Integration Services project, and a web project. In this section we will create an empty solution and add a project report to that solution. In the following sections, we will add a report to our project report.

You can start BIDS by selecting SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio from the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 application group. Click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 at the top of the menu to see the New Project dialog. Under Project Types, click Visual Studio Solutions, then select Blank Solution under Visual Studio installed templates, and fill in the Name and Location fields as shown below:

Click Ok to create an empty solution. Now we want to add a project to our solution. Remember that a solution is just one container for one or more projects. By creating an empty solution we can add several projects that complete a solution.
To add a Report Server project to the solution, click File, Add, and then New Project from the top menu and complete the Add New Project dialog as shown below:

In this section, we created an empty solution and added a Report Server to it. Note that in the image above shot Report Server Project Wizard is one of the options below the installed Visual Studio templates.

This option will create a project and start the Report Wizard immediately. If this section is correct, you probably do not need to create a new project for each report.
We are now ready to enter the next section where we will install the sample database that we will use to build our reports.
